Blacks Beach, San Diego is one of the best surf breaks in California. It’s aligned perfectly with a deep offshore canyon that acts like a funnel to take swell from almost any direction. There are three main peaks that start breaking around knee high and easily stay lined up past triple overhead. If you’re brave enough (or crazy enough) to paddle out on one of those really big days at blacks, it’s usually a good idea to keep the session short and save some energy; because if getting caught inside on a big set doesn’t kill you, the long walk back up that hill on an empty tank may finish you off.
